AWS AI Updates: October 30, 2026

1. AWS Step Functions Workflows Can Now Be Called as Tools by AI Agents

AWS made existing Step Functions Standard and Express workflows available as AI agent tools through Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Gateway, which exposes tools to agents over the Model Context Protocol (MCP). The agent decides when to start a workflow and what input to pass, and Step Functions then executes the defined steps in a fixed order, keeping multi-step business processes deterministic. Agents can also query workflow executions, for example to report which runs failed overnight and at which step. AWS’s example is a support agent that starts a refund workflow while Step Functions handles the eligibility check, manager approval, and credit. The feature is available in all Regions where AgentCore Gateway runs, at standard Step Functions and AgentCore Gateway rates. Source

2. Amazon Q3 2026: AWS Revenue Up 39% to $46 Billion as Jassy Projects a $1 Trillion AWS Business

Amazon reported AWS segment sales of $46.0 billion for the quarter ended September 30, up 39% from $33.0 billion, with AWS operating income of $17.8 billion, up from $11.4 billion. Total net sales were $201.9 billion, up 12%, and AWS’s annualized revenue run-rate reached $184 billion. The release says Bedrock token volume grew nearly 17x year over year and that AgentCore customers deployed twice as many agents in Q3 as in the previous three quarters combined. On the earnings call, CEO Andy Jassy said AWS could “be a trillion-dollar revenue business in the next five to 10 years” and projected AWS growth above 40% in both 2027 and 2028. Amazon expects about $220 billion in 2026 cash capex, mostly for AWS, and “meaningfully more” in 2027. Shares fell about 6% after hours. Source Source

3. Amazon Adds More Than 100 Agentic Shopping Capabilities to Alexa

Amazon added more than 100 shopping-related capabilities to Alexa ahead of the holiday season. Users can create and edit lists by voice, change subscription settings such as moving a recurring delivery from monthly to every three months, update delivery addresses and drop-off instructions, and ask about billing problems and Prime or Audible memberships. Amazon says use of Alexa’s agentic features has grown 8x since the start of 2026 and that over 400 million consumers have used Alexa for shopping in the past 12 months. The coverage does not specify regions, device requirements, or whether the features are limited to Alexa+. Source
