1. Gemini App Can Now Generate, Preview, and Edit Documents, PDFs, Slides, and Spreadsheets

Google updated the Gemini app so users can generate, preview, and edit files directly in the chat. Supported formats include PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT, and code. A new full-screen editor lets users type edits directly, highlight text to ask Gemini questions about it, or ask Gemini to revise a selection. PDF preview and editing work on web and mobile, and all other formats are web only. The feature is available in every language and region where the Gemini app is offered. Source

2. Google Opens a Singapore Research Hub and Brings MedGemma to Frontline Care

Google announced a set of public health initiatives at its Google for Health Summit in Singapore. Google Research is opening a Singapore hub focused on foundational AI models, partnering with the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University, and will bring open models such as MedGemma into frontline care with data kept in-country. Google DeepMind is evaluating an “AI co-clinician” tool with the National University Health System that synthesizes guidelines and literature to answer clinical queries. Google.org and Google DeepMind are contributing $7 million to the Philanthropy Asia Alliance’s Health for Human Potential Coalition, including $1 million for the PathGen disease-threat detection platform. Google Cloud is also working with NHG Health on AI risk forecasting for chronic conditions, which feeds an AI health coach built on Gemini Enterprise for Customer Experience. Source

Google added hundreds of free textbooks from OpenStax, Open Textbook Library, and S Chand Publishing to Gemini Notebook. Users pick “Add sources” and then “Textbooks” to add one to a notebook. This extends Expert Intelligence, which launched last month with support for ebooks purchased on Google Play Books. Source

Google is expanding ads in Search’s AI Mode to Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Singapore, with Brazil, Mexico, and the U.K. planned for Q4 2026. It is also launching multiturn ads in the U.S., which show sponsored results on follow-up queries within an AI Mode conversation. Google added immersive explorations to the Gemini student hub, a library of interactive visual scenes, such as the inside of a jet engine or Silk Road trade routes, that users explore layer by layer. Tapping a label opens a deeper layer, down to the molecular scale. The feature is available in English, Indonesian, Hindi, Brazilian Portuguese, French, and Simplified Chinese. Audio narration and the ability to open explorations directly in a Gemini chat are coming later. Source
