Perplexity AI Updates: October 16, 2026
1. Perplexity Open-Sources SPACE, the Sandbox Platform Behind Computer
Perplexity. Perplexity open-sourced SPACE, the sandbox platform that has run every Perplexity Computer session since it replaced a commercial sandbox provider in July, and which now handles millions of sandbox creations per day. Each sandbox runs in a small virtual machine managed by a central control plane, with network access and platform-held credentials kept outside the untrusted sandbox, and with file snapshots and full-environment checkpoints that support pause, resume, recovery, and session branching. Perplexity reports sandbox creation three to five times faster than its previous provider on the same production traffic, and says all 108 attempted VM-to-host escapes in published security testing failed (some network-restriction bypasses were found and fixed). Akamai has launched SPACE on its cloud platform, Crusoe is adding it to its Managed AI Services, and CoreWeave has published setup guidance for its CKS platform; the code is at github.com/perplexityai/SPACE.
