OpenAI AI Updates: October 16, 2026
1. Codex CLI 0.163.0 Adds Mid-Turn Steering, a Searchable /config, and Daybreak by Default
OpenAI. Codex CLI 0.163.0 lets users send a follow-up while Codex is still responding to steer it immediately, and interrupting a turn now also stops active Code Mode cells and their nested tool calls. A new /config view searches preferences across categories and shows which changes need a restart, /keymap adds a configurable leader key (default Ctrl+X), and independent read-only tools such as skill, memory, and conversation-history lookups can run in parallel. Daybreak is enabled by default for eligible accounts, and codex exec can select it with an OpenAI API key when the server offers access. The release also hardens the network proxy (permission checks before DNS lookups, rejection of duplicate Host headers), restores permissions and network approvals when resuming saved threads, and drops the bundled patched zsh in favor of the standard shell executor.
