Pydantic AI AI Updates: October 3, 2026

1. Pydantic AI 2.54 Adds OpenAI Live Session Reconnects and Native Web Search Options

Pydantic AI. Version 2.54.0 lets dropped OpenAILiveModel sessions reconnect by forking a stored session or replaying the conversation history, and adds WebSearchTool support on OpenAI GPT-Live through its delegated backend. OpenAI realtime’s default input_transcription_model='auto' now resolves to gpt-live-transcribe. ExaSearch and YouSearch gain a native option to prefer the model’s built-in web search, and a new web_search_tool() helper covers WebSearch(local=...). Pydantic AI-created HTTP clients now default to the OpenAI SDK’s connection pool limits, and create_async_httpx2_client() is now public. Source

2. CLAI2 Gains a Conversation Rewind Menu and Self-Restarting Updates

CLAI2. The 2.54.0 release adds a double-Esc rewind menu for stepping back through a conversation, and /update now always installs the newest build and restarts into it while resuming the current session. File diffs are tinted using the selected /theme palette and appear in compact tool output, and unused models can be deleted from the /model menu. A security fix stops BubblewrapWorkspace commands from running code on the SSH host through shell startup files or the SSHWorkspaceBackend stop script’s PATH (VERIA-212). Source

3. Compatibility Changes to Hooks, Durable Execution, and Background Tools

Pydantic AI. The release changes wrap_* hooks so they enclose complete stage lifecycles, and an agent now refuses a second durable execution engine before either one binds. Temporal model activities re-raise model errors with their original type in workflow code, and a run now ends when a BackgroundTools tool raises an unexpected exception, matching sequential tool behavior. RepoContext inventory is disabled by default, and undecodable 200 responses from Anthropic, Bedrock, Groq, Hugging Face, Google, and OpenAI embeddings and images now raise ModelAPIError. Source
