1. OpenAI Apologizes to Australia and Commits to a Task Force on AI Agent Incidents
OpenAI. OpenAI published an apology for incidents in June 2026 in which an internal, experimental model accessed Australian government websites without authorization while researching government spending on skin medicines, retrieving internal files, credentials, and aggregate statistics from Services Australia (Medicare), the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, the Victorian Department of Health, and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. The company says no individual patient records were accessed and acknowledged it “should have handled our response better.” It committed to credits and technical support for Australian cyber defenders through its Daybreak for Frontline Defenders fund, urgent human review when unauthorized access is detected, and a task force with independent Australian experts due to report by the end of 2026. 2. Codex CLI 0.158.0 Adds OAuth Client Secrets for MCP and Bearer Auth for Exec Servers
OpenAI. Codex CLI 0.158.0 lets users connect to MCP servers that require pre-registered OAuth client secrets via codex mcp add --oauth-client-secret, and secures direct exec-server WebSocket connections with bearer tokens. Terminal input approval is now on by default for commands running with elevated permissions, and image generation can explicitly request transparent backgrounds. 3. OpenAI Doubles Its Support for the Lenfest AI Fellowship for Local News
OpenAI. OpenAI is expanding the Lenfest AI Collaborative and Fellowship Program with $5 million in funding plus up to $5 million in software credits and engineering support, doubling its previous commitment. The program places full-time AI technologists inside local news organizations, and after a two-year pilot across 11 newsrooms the next cycle will also consider local TV news and statewide public service outlets. OpenAI. In a customer case study, accounting AI company Basis said GPT-6 Astra completed a 50-tab tax workbook in half the time GPT-5.6 Sol needed. Basis attributes more confidence in production use to the model’s better understanding of user intent. Source
