1. LLM Translation Plus Differential Fuzzing as a Pattern for Migrating C Libraries to Rust
InfoQ. Olimpiu Pop reports on how Google’s security team migrated giflib, a 3,000-line C image library, to Rust in three stages: a single-shot Gemini prompt that ported the full library while keeping exported symbols and struct layouts for ABI compatibility, human experts refining FFI pointer ownership and lifetime invariants, and an automated loop where differential testing engines fed behavioral discrepancies back to the model for patch synthesis. Verification covered bit-for-bit rendering parity on more than 30 million real-world GIFs and 200 million differential fuzzing iterations over six days, and the Rust version was unaffected by an upstream heap write vulnerability (CVE-2026-26740) before it was disclosed. The authors caution that the approach is not hands-off: FFI wrappers still need human review for lifetime leaks and thread safety, and a forked Rust implementation diverges from upstream over time.
