Microsoft AI Updates: October 22, 2026

1. GitHub Rebuilds Its Git Storage on Azure to Handle Agent-Driven Write Traffic

Microsoft. GitHub described how it rearchitected its Spokes Git storage layer to handle traffic growth driven by AI agents, which had run into data center power limits. Most repositories now keep two of five replicas in Azure, and Azure serves about half of Git traffic. The changes include serializing writes per reference rather than per repository, so agents pushing to separate branches no longer block each other (3 to 4x higher write throughput in internal tests), plus a virtual replica backed by Azure Blob Storage that joins the write quorum and read replicas that scale on demand. GitHub expects write throughput to be the next bottleneck and says the final part of the series will come at GitHub Universe. Source
