Google AI Updates: October 10, 2026
1. Gemini App Moves Free Users to Auto Model Selection and Adds Thinking Levels
Google. Google began rolling out a change on October 9 that removes manual model selection for free Gemini app users, leaving only an “Auto” option that routes most prompts to Gemini 3 Flash-Lite and harder prompts to Flash or Pro. Subscribers get adjustable thinking levels (Low, Medium, and High) that replace the previous “Extended” option and match the levels used in Google AI Studio and Antigravity. Google AI Plus users will soon be limited to Flash-Lite and 3.8 Flash. Source
2. AMIE Clinical Study With BIDMC Published in The Lancet
Google. Google Research and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center published a real-world study of AMIE, Google’s research diagnostic chatbot, in The Lancet, in which 98 primary care patients consulted AMIE before urgent care visits under real-time physician supervision. No conversations had to be stopped for safety reasons, clinicians said the AI-generated summaries helped them prepare in 75% of cases, and AMIE’s differential diagnoses matched the final diagnoses 90% of the time. The authors state that larger clinical trials are needed before patient-facing AI can be evaluated at scale. Source
