1. Incremental, Agent-Driven Rewrite of GitHub’s Copilot Runtime From TypeScript to Rust
InfoQ. InfoQ reported that GitHub replaced more than 800,000 lines of the TypeScript and Node.js runtime behind Copilot CLI, the Copilot app, and the Copilot SDK with Rust over about 14.5 weeks, shipping 135 releases during the work. Instead of a parallel rewrite with a single cutover, the team swapped components one at a time behind a temporary N-API compatibility layer, which peaked at 2,019 exports and 3,356 TypeScript call sites, so existing end-to-end tests exercised the Rust code throughout. AI agents generated most of the implementation, while compilation, tests, and human review caught regressions in behavior, state and lifetime handling, and lost optimizations; the embedded runtime cut a measured startup-to-first-turn scenario from 5.25 seconds to 292 milliseconds.
