1. LangChain Ships Model Routing Middleware and Reports 64 Percent Cost Savings in Open SWE
LangChain. LangChain released model routing middleware that swaps the model an agent calls per task without otherwise changing the agent, using a classifier that reads the first human message alongside a base prompt and plain-language criteria for each tier. In Open SWE the tiers were GLM-5.3-Flash (fast), GPT-5.6 Sol (balanced), and GPT-6 Astra (performance), and switching the classifier from a structured-output LLM to the Jev decision model made routing almost 50x faster. A 973-thread A/B test cut median cost per thread from $2.61 to $0.94 (64 percent) with no measurable quality loss (29.2 percent of PRs merged versus 27.3 percent for the control), with 34 percent of threads routed to the fast tier, 56 percent to balanced, and 10 percent to performance.
