OpenAI AI Updates: October 2, 2026
1. Codex CLI 0.160.0 Adds Guardian Context Retrieval and Session Starts Outside Projects
OpenAI. Codex CLI 0.160.0 adds opt-in Guardian review capabilities that can retrieve earlier user instructions and pull in context from agent handoffs, and lets users start sessions outside a project using workspace defaults when policy permits, with saved permissions restored on resume. The agent command center gains keyboard-accessible pagination for older tasks, and subagents now keep environments that are still starting and receive their configuration or preparation failures. Fixes cover duplicate sends after reconnection, Windows sandbox PowerShell fallbacks and long-path permission repairs, and SQLite stalls during connection setup, while plugin loading now caches parsed manifests and reuses HTTP connections. 2. OpenAI Essay Argues AI’s Biggest Payoff May Be Routine Execution
OpenAI. “The eternal complement,” by Hemanth Asirvatham and Elliott Mokski, is the first essay in a series on the next economy published through Intelligence Age, the platform OpenAI’s Strategic Futures team launched in August. It argues that advanced AI may deliver most of its value by handling the “institutional intelligence” of execution (laws, funding, supply chains) rather than generating breakthrough ideas, summarized as “Genius designs the monument; institutions lay the stone.” The essay cites Nick Bloom’s finding that sustaining Moore’s law takes more than 18 times as many researchers as in the 1970s, and contrasts a “civilization of depth” driven by pure reasoning with a “civilization of width” bottlenecked by real-world experiments. 3. Albertsons Expands Use of ChatGPT Enterprise and the OpenAI API
OpenAI. OpenAI published a case study on Albertsons Companies, which is using ChatGPT Enterprise internally and the OpenAI API to build shopper-facing experiences. The Safeway experience in ChatGPT lets customers start from a recipe, photo, list, or request such as “Plan pizza night for four,” then surfaces products and savings, builds a cart, and hands off to Safeway for checkout. Albertsons plans to extend it to other banners including Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s, ACME, and Tom Thumb. Source
4. Denver Social Club The Den Saves 10 to 15 Hours a Week With ChatGPT Work
OpenAI. In a small-business case study, The Den Family Social, a Denver social club for parents, used ChatGPT Work while building out a second location and says its small team now saves 10 to 15 hours a week. Grant applications that took three days now take about two hours, and liquor-license materials dropped from four days to three hours. The team connected Gmail, Slack, and Google Drive plugins so ChatGPT Work could gather information across the business and propose next steps. Source
5. ChatGPT Adds Virtual Try-On and Favorites, Powered by ChatGPT Images 2.5
OpenAI. ChatGPT users can now upload a selfie or photo to see clothing and accessories rendered on themselves, and save discovered products to a new Favorites library. Both features run on the new ChatGPT Images 2.5 model, which OpenAI says produces more natural lighting and richer textures with lower generation latency. Users can also upload a photo of an outfit and ask ChatGPT for similar items to buy, putting it in more direct competition with Google and Pinterest for shopping discovery. Source
