1. Martin Fowler’s Fragments Collect the Case Against Cheap Generation
Architecture. The September 8 fragments assemble four arguments that all point at the same structural gap. Christian Catalini’s is the sharpest: generation cost has collapsed while verification cost has not, producing what he calls counterfeit utility, where short-term metrics look good while technical debt and eroded team capability accumulate underneath. His prescription is that organizations invest in verification at parity with generation. Steve Yegge adds that even strong models eventually build systems that exceed their own capacity to comprehend. Jessica Kerr frames the same limit as a lack of Verum Factum, understanding that comes from having built the thing: an agent’s context window clears and the understanding goes with it, so she argues for compensating with aggressive testing. Jim Gumbly names the observability version of the problem, noting that newer models including OpenAI’s Astra perform better while producing shorter and less informative traces, which degrades exactly the feedback loop safe deployment depends on.
