2. Meta FAIR’s Non-Invasive Brain-to-Text Model Narrows the Gap to Implants

Meta FAIR. Researchers published Brain2Qwerty v2, a non-invasive system that reconstructs full sentences from magnetoencephalography recordings taken outside the skull, without surgery. Across nine volunteers the model cut the average word error rate to 39 percent from the prior version’s 55 percent, with the best participant reaching 22 percent and 28 percent of sentences decoded perfectly, using a fine-tuned Qwen3 language model to clean noisy signals. Surgical implants still achieve under 2 percent error, but the asynchronous, implant-free approach points toward safer real-time assistive communication for people with speech or mobility impairments.
