Cohere AI Updates: October 21, 2026
1. Cohere Releases Rerank 5 Pro and Fast with Passage-Level Context Focus
Cohere. Cohere released Rerank 5 on October 21 in two variants: rerank-v5.0-pro for reasoning-heavy and domain-specific queries, and rerank-v5.0-fast for latency- and cost-sensitive workloads, which Cohere says outperforms Rerank 4 Pro. A new optional Context Focus capability returns the most relevant passages within each document as scored character spans in the same call, so applications can send only those passages to an LLM. The models offer calibrated relevance scores, 100+ languages, and a 32k-token context window, and upgrading requires only changing the model parameter with no re-indexing. Rerank 5 is available through the Rerank API, Microsoft Foundry, Amazon SageMaker, and Cohere’s Model Vault. Source
2. Cohere Research Proposes CALIBER for Two-Stage Confidence in Reasoning Models
Cohere. Cohere published research on CALIBER, a method that trains a reasoning model to report an initial confidence before reasoning and a final confidence about its specific answer afterward. Initial confidence is trained on the model’s success rate across repeated attempts at a question, while final confidence is trained on whether each individual answer is correct. On Cohere’s math benchmark, the calibrated 7B model cut calibration error by more than half compared with the best single-confidence baseline. Source
