1. Apple Researchers Find Bilingual Data Mixing Beats Hyperparameter Tuning for Low-Resource Pre-Training
Apple. Apple Machine Learning Research published “Mix, Don’t Tune,” which ran about 1,000 pre-training runs across four model sizes from 150M to 1.43B parameters, using Arabic as the data-constrained target language and English as the auxiliary language. Mixing in English improved validation loss by the equivalent of 2 to 3 times the unique Arabic data and downstream accuracy by 2 to 13 times, outperforming hyperparameter tuning such as high weight decay, with the gap widening as model size grows. The authors recommend prioritizing the mixing ratio over hyperparameter search and transferring hyperparameters from a small proxy model with muP. Source
