1. AI Gateway Adds Confidence-Based Fallbacks for Decision Models

Vercel. AI Gateway can now escalate a decision request to a backup model when the primary model’s confidence falls below a set threshold, configured through providerOptions.gateway.models with conditions such as confidenceBelow on Choice, Score, and Boolean questions. Conditions can target specific questions or all questions of a type and can be combined so escalation depends on more than one signal. The feature is in beta, existing fallback behavior is unchanged, and requests that trigger a fallback are billed for both stages. Source

2. Mistral Large 4 Available on AI Gateway

Vercel. Mistral’s open-weight, natively multimodal Mistral Large 4 is available on AI Gateway as mistral/mistral-large-4, without a separate Mistral account. It can be called through the AI SDK, the OpenAI-compatible Chat Completions and Responses APIs, or the Anthropic Messages API, and used from coding agents and the model playground. Source

3. Nano Banana 2.1 Image Model Added to AI Gateway

Vercel. Google’s Nano Banana 2.1 (google/gemini-nano-banana-2.1) is now on AI Gateway, with Vercel citing product recontextualization, mask- and ink-based editing, and factuality at Flash-tier latency and cost. It is accessible through the AI SDK, the OpenAI-compatible Chat Completions API, and the open-source AI CLI, at provider pricing with no Gateway markup, including on Bring Your Own Key requests.
