1. Cohere Released Tiny Aya L2-Thinker, a 3.35B Model That Reasons in the User’s Language

Cohere. Cohere Labs researchers built Tiny Aya L2-Thinker on the Tiny Aya base (32K context) by mixing three data sources: English reasoning traces from a larger model, about 5,000 machine-translated reasoning examples per language across 44 languages, and multilingual non-reasoning instruction data. English-only reasoning data yielded a 12.8% in-language reasoning rate, the translated examples raised it to 86.1%, and the full mix reached over 93% across 60 languages while staying within 2 to 3 points of English-only reasoning accuracy on most benchmarks and averaging under 5,000 reasoning tokens. The model weights, the multilingual reasoning dataset, and a demo are on Hugging Face, giving developers a small open model whose reasoning traces are readable to non-English users. Source
