OpenAI AI Updates: September 28, 2026

1. ChatGPT Code Points to “O,” an Always-On Agent, Ahead of DevDay

OpenAI. References in ChatGPT’s configuration show an agent with the display name “O,” described as an always-on assistant that keeps its own identity across chats and continues working after a user closes a session, and it briefly appeared as a benefit on the $100 Pro plan upgrade page. OpenAI Developers posted a teaser counting down 72 hours to DevDay, which takes place September 29 in San Francisco and is the likely launch window. OpenAI has not confirmed the product or its capabilities. Source

2. OpenAI Says 80 to 90 Percent of Its Research Targets GPT-7 and Beyond

OpenAI. Boris Power, OpenAI’s head of applied research, said at the Fellows Forum that the company directs 80 to 90 percent of its research toward GPT-7, GPT-8, and later models, and treats point releases such as GPT-5.1 to 5.2 as short-term bets built on specialized training data. He said the main bottleneck is user onboarding rather than model quality, since most ChatGPT users do not know what the models can do. Source
