Anthropic AI Updates: October 19, 2026

1. Anthropic Commits 5% of Its Shares to a New Public Benefit Fund

Anthropic. Anthropic is creating the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a wholly-owned LLC (rather than a 501(c)(3)) that will start with 5% of the company’s shares, subject to stockholder approval. The board can add 2% for every 50% increase in company value above a baseline that has not been disclosed. Anthropic says this equity comes from awards that would otherwise have gone to executives as escalating compensation. Equity held by the fund cannot be used for lobbying or political giving in the US or abroad. The LLC structure is meant to allow both large grants to nonprofits and direct distributions to affected groups, with labor market impacts named as an example on top of the company’s existing $200 million commitment to economic futures research. Combined with the co-founders’ pledge to donate 80% of their equity and an employee donation match that about half of staff use, Anthropic estimates roughly 20% of its shares will be dedicated to the public good. Governance details, the valuation milestones, and a public benefit report are due in the coming months. Source
