1. Context Language Models Let Agents Edit Their Own Context Instead of Relying on Fixed Compaction

InfoQ. InfoQ covered research from Meta, MIT, and the University of Washington on Context Language Models (CLMs), which treat their context as an editable file: they rewrite old messages, keep key facts, drop irrelevant material, and maintain progress notes. They replace fixed summarization, compaction, and retrieval pipelines. Used zero-shot, the approach reported 11.4% higher accuracy with 21.5% fewer FLOPs on BrowseComp-Plus and 5% higher scores with 59% fewer FLOPs on a 12-hour EdgeBench run. With reinforcement learning, Qwen3.5-9B rose from 28.8% to 42.5% on BrowseComp-Plus while using 12% fewer FLOPs. The open issues are practical ones: rewriting context invalidates the KV cache, information the model drops cannot be recovered, and prompt injections can persist in edited context across turns.
