Google AI Updates: May 27, 2026
1. DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis says society is in the “foothills of the singularity” with AGI possibly arriving by 2029
Google. DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis told audiences at Google’s developer conference that humanity is in the “foothills of the singularity” and has only a few years to prepare for general-purpose AI. He said AGI could land within four years or sooner, and that while DeepMind’s broad 2030 target still stands, he now sees 2029 as a realistic possibility. Hassabis characterized the current wave of AI agents as “a little bit like a practice run” for far more capable systems, and urged economists and policymakers to accelerate safety, governance, and labor-market preparation before those systems become operational.
