Apple AI Updates: May 17, 2026
1. Reports detail iOS 27 Siri rebuild ahead of WWDC
Apple. Reports surfacing in the run-up to WWDC describe a rebuilt Siri in iOS 27 that lives in the Dynamic Island, gets a dedicated app for the first time, and exposes a system-wide “Search or Ask” bar invoked by swiping down from the top of the display. The new interface presents a transparent results card that expands into an iMessage-style conversation mode with inline cards for weather, notes, and calendar items, and lets users swap in third-party chatbots such as ChatGPT or Gemini from the same search bar. The overhaul is the productized surface for the Gemini-backed Apple Foundation Models deal announced in January and is expected to ship alongside the rest of iOS 27 in the fall. Source
2. Apple settles iPhone 16 “AI-powered Siri” class action for $250 million
Apple. Apple agreed to pay $250 million to settle a class action accusing the company of false advertising over the AI-powered Siri features marketed at the iPhone 16 launch but never delivered on the promised timeline. The settlement pays $25 per qualifying device, rising to as much as $95 per device if claim volume is low, and closes the most prominent legal exposure from the original Apple Intelligence Siri delay. The payout lands weeks before WWDC, where Apple is expected to ship the Gemini-backed Siri rebuild it has been pre-briefing through Bloomberg reporting. Source
