Apple AI Updates: May 12, 2026

1. Apple proposes BalCapRL for balanced RL-based MLLM captioning

Apple. BalCapRL jointly optimizes utility-aware correctness, reference coverage, and linguistic quality during RL fine-tuning of multimodal LLM captioners, rather than letting one reward dominate and produce hallucinated or runaway-length captions. The team applies GDPO-style reward-decoupled normalization to continuous-valued captioning rewards and adds a length-conditional penalty, reporting gains up to +13.6 DCScore, +9.0 CaptionQA, and +29.0 CapArena over GRPO baselines on LLaVA-1.5-7B and Qwen2.5-VL variants. 2. Apple releases PPML 2026 workshop recordings and papers

Apple. Apple posted recordings and the full bibliography from its 2026 Workshop on Privacy-Preserving Machine Learning & AI, including four featured talks on differential-privacy cryptography, matrix factorization, data collection ethics, and memorization in foundation models. Three of the 24 published works are Apple-authored and focus on homomorphic encryption, privacy loss accounting, and the memorization-utility trade-off — useful primary sources for teams shipping models under strict PPML constraints. 3. iOS 26.5 ships without the rumored Apple Intelligence upgrades

Apple. Apple released iOS 26.5 broadly on May 11 with E2EE RCS, Suggested Places in Maps, and a Pride wallpaper, but no upgraded Apple Intelligence — the contextual, Gemini-trained Siri that had been rumored for a spring 2026 release did not ship. Commentary frames 26.5 as backend groundwork (including Apple Intelligence rollout in China) with the next AI-facing changes expected at WWDC. Source
