1. Apple Split “When to Steer” From “How to Steer” in Activation Steering

Apple published Dynamically Scaled Activation Steering (DSAS), a method-agnostic framework that addresses a known cost of activation steering: existing methods apply the intervention uniformly across every input, which degrades model performance on the inputs that did not need steering in the first place. DSAS decouples the decision of whether to intervene from the mechanics of the intervention, adaptively modulating the strength of an existing steering transformation per input rather than applying a fixed magnitude. Because it wraps existing steering methods rather than replacing them, it applies to established use cases such as toxicity mitigation without changing the underlying technique. Source
