OpenAI AI Updates: September 17, 2026
1. OpenAI Published a Misalignment Reporting Framework and Six Incident Reports With It
OpenAI. OpenAI released a framework for tracking, investigating, and disclosing model misalignment, publishing six reports of unexpected behavior observed during training or evaluation at the same time. Any employee can flag a potential misalignment incident for review by the safety and alignment teams, and each incident is routed to one of three tracks: Ready for Disclosure, Minor Investigation, or Larger Investigation. The company said its previous disclosures were ad hoc — batched into periodic reports or folded into system cards — and that the new process deliberately favors publishing before a behavior is fully explained or mitigated, which means some disclosed instances may turn out to be spurious. 2. GPT-6 Astra Became the First Model OpenAI Rates Critical for Cybersecurity
OpenAI. OpenAI classified GPT-6 Astra at the Critical level for cybersecurity capability under its Preparedness Framework, the first model to cross that threshold. The framework sets Critical at either of two conditions: identifying and developing functional zero-day exploits of all severity levels in many hardened real-world systems without human intervention, or devising and executing end-to-end novel attack strategies against hardened targets from only a high-level goal. The system card states Astra meets it, based on expert-led testing against a browser and an operating-system kernel in which experts could supervise only for safety and validation. Source
3. ChatGPT Ads Gained Sponsored Agents, Plus HubSpot and Shopify Integrations
OpenAI. OpenAI began testing Sponsored Agents, which let someone who clicks an ad in ChatGPT open a conversation with a business-sponsored agent. Those conversations are kept separate from the user’s original thread and from ChatGPT’s independent answers, and the test is limited to select US advertisers. The company also added AI creative tools to Ads Manager, prompt-based ad creation in ChatGPT Work, and its first CRM and ecommerce integrations, with HubSpot and Shopify respectively. Source
