1. Study Finds ASR Models Overfit to Benchmark Quirks

Hugging Face. A Hugging Face blog post examines benchmark optimization in automatic speech recognition, where models score well on public benchmarks by learning dataset-specific patterns rather than genuinely improving. Testing 11 open-source ASR models with three probes, the authors found systems reproducing known transcription errors in VoxPopuli reference text, recovering deliberately silenced numbers, and adjusting spelling conventions based on acoustic cues tied to a specific dataset. The findings suggest models can detect which benchmark they are being evaluated on, meaning reported scores may overstate real-world transcription accuracy. Source
