OpenAI AI Updates: October 1, 2026

OpenAI. OpenAI said it disrupted a coordinated campaign to extract protected model reasoning, attributing a core cluster of the activity to people linked to Moonshot AI. The operators copied encrypted reasoning from one conversation and asked the model to decrypt and transcribe it as plain text in another, without breaking the encryption itself; activity began July 1, peaked at 16,000 prompts from 4,000 users on July 24 and 25, and reached about 15,000 suspicious users before OpenAI fully disrupted it on July 28. OpenAI banned accounts, fixed the cross-conversation decryption bug, tightened signup and infrastructure controls, and strengthened hidden-reasoning protections across users, workspaces, organizations, and model families, which is relevant for any provider that exposes encrypted reasoning items to clients.
