1. Hugging Face Publishes “State of Open Models: Summer 2026” Ecosystem Review
Hugging Face. Hugging Face published “State of Open Models: Summer 2026 Observations,” a biannual analysis of the open model ecosystem across the first seven months of 2026, authored by team members including Adina Yakefu, Apolinário Passos, and Irene Solaiman. The report finds that Chinese labs released larger models than American ones during the period, with monthly parameter ceilings reaching 2.78 trillion versus under 130 billion, and that 59% of 178 Chinese releases above 20 billion parameters carry Apache 2.0 licenses while 22% use MIT, with none carrying non-commercial restrictions. It also reports that Qwen has become the ecosystem’s most-built-on base with 151,448 derivatives and 180 to 210 new repositories per day, that models under 1 billion parameters account for 83% of all-time downloads while models above 100 billion account for about 1%, and that agent traffic to the Hub surged, with nearly a quarter of agent-tagged requests coming from unregistered sources by July.
