Google AI Updates: July 24, 2026
1. Pichai Says Gemini’s Next Leap Depends on Much Larger Base Models
Google. On Alphabet’s earnings call, CEO Sundar Pichai said Google’s next advance in frontier AI depends on building much larger base models and disclosed that the company has begun its most ambitious pre-training run yet for Gemini 4. He singled out coding and agentic coding as areas where current models still need to improve. The comments signal that Google is betting on continued scale-up of base-model training rather than relying only on post-training refinements. Source
2. Gemini Nears a Billion Monthly Users
Google. Google said on its earnings call that Gemini has passed 950 million monthly active users, roughly tripling year over year from about 750 million in February and closing in on ChatGPT, which crossed a billion users in June. The company credited hardware engineering improvements with lowering the cost of serving its AI Mode even as it ships new models. The figure marks Gemini’s approach to becoming another Google product with more than a billion users. Source
