1. Meta AI and KAUST Propose Neural Computers That Unify Computation, Memory, and I/O

Meta. A 19-person team from Meta AI and KAUST (including LSTM inventor Jurgen Schmidhuber) published a paper proposing Neural Computers, an architecture that unifies computation, memory, and I/O in a learned runtime state, making the model itself the running computer rather than a layer on top of one. The team built early prototypes using screen recordings alone, including 1,510 hours of Ubuntu desktop and roughly 1,100 hours of terminal interactions, demonstrating early runtime primitives though the system cannot yet reliably perform two-digit arithmetic or maintain coherent behavior across longer tasks.
