Meta AI Updates: April 9, 2026
1. Meta Launches Muse Spark, Its First Frontier Model and First Without Open Weights
Meta. Meta launched Muse Spark, the first model from Meta Superintelligence Labs (led by Alexandr Wang), marking a clean break from the Llama family and Meta’s first model released without open weights. Muse Spark features three modes: Instant for fast responses, Thinking for deeper reasoning, and a forthcoming Contemplating mode that orchestrates multiple agents reasoning in parallel. On benchmarks, it scores 58% on Humanity’s Last Exam and 38% on FrontierScience Research using a “thought compression” training technique achieving this with 10x less compute than Llama 4 Maverick. It ranks fourth on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index behind GPT-5.4, Gemini 3.1 Pro, and Claude Opus 4.6.
Muse Spark ships with 16 integrated tools including web search, page browsing, Meta content search across Instagram/Threads/Facebook, image generation in artistic and realistic modes, Python code execution, visual grounding, HTML/SVG artifact creation, and sub-agent spawning. It currently powers meta.ai with rollout to WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and AI glasses in coming weeks. Zuckerberg confirmed future Muse models will include open-source releases. Source
2. Meta Contributes Helion to PyTorch Foundation for Open AI Kernel Authoring
Meta. At PyTorch Conference Europe in Paris, Meta contributed Helion to the PyTorch Foundation, standardizing open, portable, and accessible AI kernel authoring as a first-class part of the PyTorch ecosystem. Helion reduces manual kernel coding effort through autotuning and strengthens custom kernel creation, addressing a key bottleneck for teams optimizing model performance on diverse hardware. Source
