Google AI Updates: April 8, 2026
1. Study Finds Google AI Overviews Are Accurate 9 Out of 10 Times
Google. A new independent study on Google’s AI-generated search responses found they are factually correct approximately 90% of the time, offering the first systematic measure of the error rate for AI Overview results. Google has long included a disclaimer that “AI responses may include mistakes,” but this research puts a number to the risk for the first time. The study examined a broad sample of queries across informational categories; error rates were higher for medical and legal questions than for general factual lookups. Source
2. Google Maps Uses Gemini to Write AI Captions for User-Contributed Photos
Google. Google Maps now generates AI captions for user-contributed photos and videos using Gemini, automatically producing descriptive text that contextualizes what is shown in a photo (e.g., identifying dishes, describing storefronts, or summarizing scenes). The captions appear alongside photos in Google Maps listings and are designed to help other users understand content without needing to study each image. The feature uses Gemini’s multimodal understanding and expands on Google’s broader push to make user-generated content more discoverable across Maps. Source
